MENTOR MANAGER Math Education (Provider Management)

The Mentor Manager works as part of the Mentor Management and Provider Management team. The Mentor Manager for Math Education is responsible for managing coach mentoring and mentoring activities related to school projects as well as managing tutor mentoring teams. This individual will serve as the math content and math pedagogy expert for the Mentor Management team. The Mentor Manager for Math Education will provide leadership on issues related to math education to reinforce Tutor.com's on-going commitment to providing high quality educational experiences in every session.

Responsibilities: Working in a team setting to:· Manage online professional development coaches and ensure that all coaching sessions are of the highest quality. Duties include mentoring coaches, reviewing sessions and providing feedback, interviewing coaches, assisting in the development of resources, directing the work of coach mentors; Manage staffing, mentoring and quality control for K-12 programs; Advise the Provider Management team on new developments and resources in the field of math education; Supervise mentors and/or a senior mentor through review of feedback, review of disciplinary action recommendations, guidance through difficult situations, follow-through of administrative actions required to properly maintain a mentoring team, and general oversight of the team quality; Coordinate, track, and analyze quality control review processes such as comment reviews, session reviews, and filtered sessions; Identify, develop, organize, and coordinate math resources for tutors, mentors, and senior mentors; Coordinate with the tutor recruitment team to evaluate the quality of applicants through effective applicant testing, mock session evaluation, and complete reviews of applicant skills; Analyze quality control and tutor and coach performance issues and propose new procedures, resources, and best practices; Special projects as they arise.

Qualifications: Must have at least 4 years recent experience as secondary level math teacher preferably in a public school setting; Must have demonstrated experience in the field of professional development for math teachers; Must be familiar with and have experience with the most recent principles and standards for teaching math; Experience teaching in the online environment preferred; Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail while managing several projects at the same time; Strong communication skills - both written and oral - with regards to content, style and proficiency with MS Word; Must be proficient using Microsoft Office Suite of Products especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint; experience using GoToMeeting software as well as school based educational technology such as smart boards a plus; Able to work well in a team environment and to motivate team members; Available to work above and beyond the normal working hours should the need arise; Highly motivated and shows initiative to solve problems, learn new skills, recommend changes, or take on additional projects; Solid understanding of and agrees with Tutor.com's educational approach; Minimum Bachelor's Degree required , advanced degree preferred; Exceptional skills in teaching math; Preference given to current Tutor.com mentors and tutors; All candidates must be US residents and legally eligible to work in the US ; High-speed internet access required.

Emerging Teacher-Leaders in Elementary School Mathematics Grants for Grades PreK-5 Teachers

The purpose of this grant is to increase the breadth and depth of the mathematics content knowledge of one elementary school teacher who has a demonstrated commitment to mathematics teaching and learning. The applicant must have the support of the school principal in becoming a mathematics teacher-leader within her or his school or district. For the 2012-2013 school year, grants with a maximum of $6,000 each will be awarded. Only one teacher per school may receive the award. The desired outcome of the funded project is the development of an elementary school mathematics teacher with mathematics content expertise.

The applicant must (1) be a classroom (elementary school) teacher* with at least three years of experience and (2) have mathematics as a regular teaching responsibility. (*The definition of a classroom teacher is an individual who spends half or more of his/her work time teaching in the classroom.)

GRANTS AND FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

NCTM: Mathematics Course Work Scholarships for Grades PreK-5 Teachers
The National Council for the Teachers of Mathematics Course Work Scholarships for Grades PreK-5 Teachers provides financial support for improving teachers' understanding of mathematics by completing course work. Maximum award: $2,000. Eligibility: individual classroom teachers or small groups of teachers currently teaching mathematics in grades PreK-5 level who are also (as of October 14, 2011) Full Individual or e-Members of NCTM, or teach in a school with a current (as of October 14, 2011) NCTM PreK-8 school membership. Deadline: November 11, 2011.

NSTA: Awards for Excellence in Inquiry-based Science Teaching
The Delta Education/Frey-Neo/CPO Science Awards for Excellence in Inquiry-based Science Teaching recognize and honor full-time PreK-12 teachers of science who successfully use inquiry-based science to enhance teaching and learning in their classroom. Maximum award: $1,500 towards expenses to attend the NSTA National Conference, and $1,500 for the awardee. Eligibility: PreK-12 teachers of science. Deadline: November 30, 2011.

VSP: Sight for Students
Sight for Students is a VSP charity that provides free vision exams and glasses to low-income, uninsured children. The program operates nationally through a network of community partners who identify children in need and VSP network doctors who provide the eyecare services. Parents and guardians interested in seeking assistance through the Sight for Students program must work through VSP's established network of community partners. VSP does not issue gift certificates directly to the public. Eligibility: There are five basic qualifications a child must meet in order to receive a Sight for Students gift certificate: family income is no more than 200 percent of federal poverty level (see website for chart); child is not enrolled in Medicaid or other vision insurance; child is 18 years old or younger and has not graduated from high school; child or parent is a U.S. citizen or legal immigrant with a social security number; and child has not used the Sight for Students program during the past 12 months. JOB OPPORTUNITY
We are helping to recruit Algebra Coaches for an online, professional development pilot and figured this might be a great opportunity for some of our statewide algebra for all teachers or someone you know. Below is a summary of the pilot and the part-time position.

 

Tutor.com, the largest online tutoring and homework help service, is recruiting 25 part-time, online instructional coaches to participate in a completely new professional development model providing live, one-to-one, on demand support for middle and high school algebra teachers. The two-year pilot is funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Coaches must be certified math teachers with at least 5 years experience teaching all levels of algebra, have a minimum of 2 years teacher coaching experience and be available to work at least 10 hours per week - Sunday through Thursday. Coaches will work one to one with teachers online to support them with content, pedagogy, resources, and classroom management issues.
